What's In Your Thermal Paper? We Sent Ours to a Lab to Find Out.

Here's a question almost nobody in this industry can answer: what's actually in the coating on your thermal transfer paper?

Not the marketing copy. Not the "premium quality" sticker. The actual chemistry — the stuff that transfers onto skin you're about to open with a needle.

Most manufacturers can't tell you. Many have never tested it. Some genuinely don't know, because they buy coated stock from whoever's cheapest this quarter and box it up. The industry has run on "trust us" for decades, and for decades artists have had no way to check.

We decided that wasn't good enough for the paper with our name on it.

We sent Gold Standard to SGS. Here's what came back.

This spring we submitted Electrum Gold Standard Thermal Transfer Paper for independent third-party testing through SGS — one of the largest testing and certification organizations in the world. Nobody required us to do it. No regulator asked. We wanted the answer on paper, from a lab that doesn't work for us.

The results, completed July 2026:

  • Passed REACH SVHC screening — screened for 253 Substances of Very High Concern (plus one candidate substance), the European Union's list of chemicals linked to cancer, reproductive harm, endocrine disruption, and environmental toxicity. No tested SVHC detected above regulatory thresholds.
  • Passed RoHS compliance testing — under Directive 2011/65/EU and (EU) 2015/863.
  • No detectable heavy metals — lead, mercury, cadmium, and hexavalent chromium all came back below detection limits.
  • No detectable restricted phthalates — DEHP, BBP, DBP, and DIBP.

That makes Gold Standard one of the only tattoo thermal papers in the world with independent third-party verification of these standards.

And it's documented: view our Certificate of Compliance (No. COC-GS-2026-001). Full SGS laboratory reports are available to studios, distributors, and regulatory agencies on request.

What is REACH, and why should a tattoo artist care?

REACH is one of the strictest chemical safety regulations on Earth. Its "Substances of Very High Concern" list is the EU's running catalog of chemicals with serious evidence of harm — carcinogens, reproductive toxins, endocrine disruptors, bioaccumulative compounds. When a product is screened against that list, you're not getting a vibe. You're getting a lab's answer to the exact question that matters: is any of that in here?

For Gold Standard, the answer came back clean.

Why this matters at the stencil stage

Tattooing already takes skin integrity seriously everywhere else — sterile needles, single-use cartridges, medical-grade prep. But the stencil is where the process actually starts. That transfer sits on the skin for the length of the session, right where the needle works. What's in that coating deserves the same scrutiny as everything else on your station.

We're not going to tell you other papers are dangerous — we haven't tested them, and neither have most of the companies selling them. That's exactly the point. We can only speak for ours, and now we can speak for ours with documentation.

Verified beats "trust us"

This is what we mean by THE VERIFIED STANDARD™. It's not a new formula or a rebrand — it's the same Gold Standard paper artists have used for crisp, durable, long-lasting stencils for years. What's new is that its safety profile is no longer a claim. It's a certificate with a number on it, backed by one of the most respected testing organizations in the world.

In an industry that runs on assumptions, we'd rather run on lab reports.

FAQ

Is Gold Standard paper "chemical-free"?

No paper is — and any company telling you theirs is should worry you. What we can say, because independent testing verified it: no detectable heavy metals, no detectable restricted phthalates, and no tested SVHC above regulatory thresholds.

Can I see the actual documentation?

Yes. The Certificate of Compliance is public. Studios and distributors can request the full SGS laboratory reports — contact us.

Did the paper change?

No. Same transfer quality, same crisp lines, same compatibility with every thermal copier and hand-stenciling method. The testing verified what was already in the box.

Does this matter outside Europe?

REACH and RoHS are EU frameworks, but the substances they screen for don't care about borders. Artists everywhere put stencils on skin; verification travels.
